Adipose-Derived Stem Cell Activation

| Adult stem cells (ASCs), otherwise also referred to as tissue-specific (multipotent) stem cells, have been shown – under specific suitable conditions – to generate a variety of different cell types including cell types of a different germ-layer of origin. This phenomenon is referred to as stem cell transdifferentiation or plasticity. The specific suitable conditions under which this transdifferentiation is induced is achieved by the modification of the culture medium in vitro, or by transplanting the stem cells into an organ, the tissue type of which is different to the one from which they were isolated. However, the exact mechanism of this transdifferentiation is still under debate. |
